According to the California Vehicle Code, If the car accident resulted in an injury or death, you must notify the California Highway Patrol or your local police department within 24 hours.
It’s best to make a police report IMMEDIATELY after the accident while you’re still at the scene in order to preserve all evidence, and so that the police can take statements from any witnesses to the accident.
